The big news in the papers these days is that of the cricketers not chosen for the overrated IPL. I particularly do not like the words the media is using liberally – players auctioned, costliest, sold, unsold etc. As if the cricketers are commodities that can be bought by untalented movie “stars” and arrogant business magnates.
Lot of ignominious columns are being written about Brian Lara and Sourav Ganguly among others. Have they forgotten that these players hold several incredible records, playing for their countries? The articles the newspapers carry seem to wane the respect the players deserve.
The glamour version of cricket may have attracted a huge attention. But it has earned no respect.

In school we were grouped into four teams – red, blue, green and yellow. Every year we would have to join a different team. Since we did not stay in a single team too long, we never felt a sense of belonging toward our current team.
Now that many of the IPL cricketers play for a different team than last year, do they go out on the ground and play with passion for their team or just for the lure of big money? And who is the audience going to cheer – its home team or the “home players” that are on the rival team?

i disagree !! .... i have a totally diff take on it... c i know u r a Sourav Ganguly fan n he wnt unsold..but der i sa reason to it.. dis format of the game (t 20) does not suit players like him n lara ...obviously dey have been gr8 players but dis game is too fast for players like them who r old n have retired ..i would prefer leaving them unsold than to buy them n making such gr8's sit on the bench, like it happened to mcgrath n s.pollock..
ReplyDelete"MONEY"...is a very very big FACTOR mayb not for those players who have established themselves in d indian team but wat abt those who havent still made itto d team..IPL is d only time dey r paid... n in d IPL more dan half d players uncapped..as a min of 7 ind players must play in d 11 ... n abt d players switching team is concerned ,its not that a big deal as they r just shifting franchisies n not countries.. franchises and d players wer given an option to b retained in d same team ...n few teams like CSK did retain most of them..n rite frm IPL 1 not all players have played fr their own state ex:kohli (frm delhi bt played fr RCB) ...n switching teams also tests the players in their ability to cope with a new set of players..
Good point, Kaushik :)
ReplyDeleteFirst, I'm not a cricket fan anymore. Sourav was my favourite player, but the post was not inspired by his not being "bought".
I am against the processes of "buying" and "selling" of people in full public view. There are graceful ways of selecting players for the teams like the football clubs have.

The article on this link describes my views better than my own post.
